On New year day one has to wakeup early in the morning say 4.30am (arunodaya kala). While getting up turn on your right side and get up. Pray for your family deity first. If no particular deity is worshipped or if you do not know please pray Lord Srinivasa of Tirupathy as this is the famous deity and immediate helper in this Kali yuga.
Then recite ‘karagre……’. Then ‘ Samudravasane….’. Then recite this. Actually this should be chanted daily.

There is a slight different version of this sloka also followed in AP/Karnataka.

After the prayer look at God’s picture, Mirror, Cow, Sun, Acharyas etc . This is to start the day with good omen. Now to sloka.
