WHY WE SHOULD GO TO TEMPLE?

Temple is the focus for all aspects of everyday life in the community. Jagadguru K.K. Shankaracharya Swami wrote:"Our temples are not organised as places for meditation, nor for congregational worship. The purpose of temple is different. We enjoy the good things in life such as house, food, clothing, ornaments, music, dance, etc. We pay a tribute in the form of taxes to the king or to the government, for making it possible for us to enjoy them by giving us their protection and other facilities. We are bound to render our gratitude to God who has primarily given us the good things of life".  Hindus believe that their lives are merely stages in the progression to ultimate enlightenment. The temple is a place where it is believed that God may be approached and where divine knowledge can be discovered. All aspects of the temple - the principles of design and construction, the forms of its architecture and decoration, and the rituals performed - focus on the goal of enlightenment and liberation. And all of these are determined by ancient texts or shastras.

The temple is the place where  offerings are made on behalf of the collective community. Even if people do not go to the temple, it is enough if these offerings are made to God on behalf of the community. The duty of the people at the place is to see that these offerings are made in the proper manner.

Each of the five senses contribute to our joy in life. It is this offering of the objects of the five fold joys that is known as Panchopachaaraas to God, the offerings during puja namely Gandha (Fragrant sandalwood), Pushpa (flowers),  Dhoopa (incense), Deepa (lamps) and Naivaday (Food). If our organs of sense perceptions and their stimuli are reverentially offered to the Lord, then we shall not be inclined to misuse these sense organs. By such dedications to God, we deflect these from evil propensities and sublimate them to a divine goal.

Besides the requirements which are the minimum sources of material pleasure, there are other things which make for life`s comfort, like house, clothes, conveyance, etc. These too are to be used only after they are offered to God. All such offerings are inclined in what is known as Shodasopacharas(sixteen offerings). All these should also be offered to God and they are included in the 64 or Chatushti Upacharaas.

There are hundreds of temples all over India in different size, shape and ocations but not all of them are considered to be in the Vedic way.

Generally, the temples are located in a place where earth's magnetic waves pass through. In simple terms, these temples are located strategically at a place where the positive energy is abundantly available from the magnetic wave distribution of north/ south pole thrust.

Because of its location, where high magnetic values are available, the Main Idol is placed in the center, and also because they place a copper plate written with some Vedic scripts, which is buried, beneath the Main Idol's placement known as "Garbhagriha" or Moolasthan, the copper absorbs the earths magnetic waves and radiates to the surroundings. Thus a person who regularly visits a temple and makes clockwise pradakshina of the Main Idol's placement, automatically receives the beamed magnetic waves which get absorbed by his body. This is very slow and a regular visit will make him absorb more energy, known as positive energy.

In addition, the Sanctum Sanctorum is completely enclosed on three sides. The effect of all energies is very high in here. The lamp that is lit radiates the heat and light energy. The ringing of the bells and the chanting of prayers gives sound energy. The fragrance from the flowers, the burning of camphor give out chemical energy. The effect of all these energies is activated by the positive energy that comes out of the idol. This is in addition to the north/south pole magnetic energy that is absorbed by the copper plate and utensils that are kept in the Moolasthan.

The water used for the Pooja is mixed with Cardamom, Benzoine, Holy Basil (Tulsi), Clove, etc is the "Theertham". This water becomes more energized because it receieves the positive-ness of all these energies combined. When persons go to the temple for Deepaaraadhana, and when the doors open up, the positive energy gushes out onto the persons who are there. The water that is sprinkled onto the people passes on the energy to all. That is the reason why, men are not allowed to wear shirts to the temple and ladies have to wear more ornaments because it is through these jewels (metal) that positive energy is absorbed in ladies. It is proved that Theertham is a very good blood purifier, as it is highly energized.

In addition, temples offer holy water (about three spoons). This water is mainly a source of magneto therapy as they place the copper water vessel at the Garbhagriha. It also contains cardamom, clove, saffron, etc to add taste and Tulsi (holy Basil) leaves are put into the water to increase its medicinal value! The clove essence protects one from tooth decay, the saffron & Tulsi leave essence protects one from common cold and cough, cardamom and benzoine known as Pachha Karpuram, acts as a mouth refreshing agents. This way, one's health too is protected, by regularly visiting Temples!

WHY LAMP IS LIT?

Light is said to be an energy and fame. It has an upward motion. It should be lit at both dawn and dusk of each day. If it is maintained continuously it is called ‘Akhanda Deepam’.

All auspicious functions commence with the lighting of lamp which is maintained throught the occasion. By offering light the deities become enduced with beauty, energy and resplendence. If lamp is not lit then Rakshasas will become active and occupy the place.

Light removes darkness. That is light is the 'knowledge’ and it removes ignorance. The Lord is the ‘Highest seat Knowledge’(chaitanya) and is the source, the enlivener and the illuminator of all knowledge. Amongst the lights, the best are those in which pure ghee (cow) is burnt. Next comes mustard oil, castor oil etc.

The oil or ghee in the lamp symbolises our ‘vaasanas’ or negative tendencies and ‘wick’, the ego. When lit with spiritual knowledge, the ‘vaasanas’ slowly get exhausted and the ego slowly perishes. The flame of light burns up and we should acquire knowledge which should take us to higher ideals. The person who gives light first illuminates his face, attains purity of soul and effulgence form.

Want to know more ?

A tilak is an auspicious symbol. It is applied on the forehead in the space between two eyebrows. This place is called Ajna Chakra. The place is also called Bhrumadhya. ‘Bhru’ means eyebrow and ‘Madhya’ means center. It has a very cooling effect. Mostly saivas apply three horizontal lines using sacred ashes (Bhasma), vaishavites put three vertical lines (Thripundra) using sandal paste, and Devi or Sakthi devotees use kumkum, a red Turmeric powder. While applying they pray to the Lord to protect from the evil effects of trigunatmika maya which has Sattwa, Rajas and Tamas as its binding chord.

Sandal paste has a medicinal value apart from the spiritual value and it will nullify the heating effect when you concentrate and meditate. The scriptures say “a forehead without a Tilak is like a woman without a husband, a mantra without knowing the meaning during japa, a disciple who does not consider his guru as a form of God, a country without justice etc. The spot is from where electromagnetic waves spreads through the entire body. The point also indicates where the spiritual eye opens and during meditation we concentrate on Bhrumadhya. This is also the place where Lord Siva’s third eye is located and when he opens the three worlds (upper, middle and lower) are destroyed. So also for jeeva if the third eye is opened it destroys the fear and sins affecting through Adhyatmika, Adhidaivika and Adhibhautika. Please see post ‘shanti, shanti, shanty’. So apply tilak according to your varna. Each of the four varnas use different colour and different sacred materials.

PRAYER ROOM -

Why separate Pooja Room?

The God is omnipresent, omni potent and omniscient. He is the Brahman and highest and all things are given by him. In most of the Indian homes there will have a prayer room or altar. This room will always be kept clean and well decorated. All meditation, prayers, chanting, reading spiritual books, devotional singing etc are done here. We are actually owner of the house but all things are gift of god to us. In order to get rid of false pride and possessiveness we do allot him a separate room thinking that he is always residing with us and guiding us.  In Indian tradition a guest is given all honour and comfort during his stay and as God is a welcome guest we provide all comfort to him by giving a separate room which is clean and decorated.

WHY KUMBHA KALASA IS USED IN MANY FUNCTIONS? -

A Kalasa is made up mud, brass, silver or copper filled with matter. It is temporarily used to install god, devas (Aavahanam) for worship with proper mantras and installation is called ‘Kumbha Sthabanam’. We consider the Kalasa itself as God after proper ‘Aavahana Mantras’. The mud represents the body. A red or white thread is tied around around its neck or sometimes all round the Kalasa in a intricate diamond shaped pattern. The thread represents the 72000 nerves running inside the body. The cloth put on the neck represents the skin. The water and other perfume ingredients pourned in the Kalasa is considered as blood. The coin we put inside the pot represents sperm (சுக்கிலம்). The Koorcha represents backbone, Mango leaves represent hair(‘சடை’), coconut represents the head (‘கபாலம்’), the koorcha placed outside represent tuft (குடுமி) which drives out demons, proyoga mantras as jeevan, the grains spread represent for the seat of God. The entire set is called purnakumba representing the inert body when filled with divine life force gains the power to do all the wonderful things that makes life.

The bottom portion represents earth (Prithivi), middle enlarged portion represents water (appu), neck portion represents fire (Agni), mouth represents air (vaayu), coconut, mango leaves represent space (Akasa). Thus the five elementsv i.e., panchabutham is brought out.

Lord Vishnu was sleeping on the snake bed in the milky ocean at the time creation of entire world. A lotus flower emerged from his stomach and from it emerged Lord Brahma, the creator of universe. Hence the water in the Kalasa represents primordial water from which entire creation emerged. The water from all the holy rivers, the knowledge of Vedas, blessings of all the deities are invoked in the Kalasa and its water is thereafter used for all the rituals including the abhisheka.

Sometimes the Kalasa is filled up rice also and the Purnakumbha (entire set) is offered to saints, men of wisdom as a sign of respectful and reverential welcome.

WHY 'AUM' IS CHANTED IN THE BEGINNING?

‘AUM’ is the sound of Brahman and has a great effect on the mind and body of person chanting and also on the surroundings.  Most Vedic Mantras and Vedic prayers start with  ‘AUM’.

It has three curves representation three states of consciousness.

It has three hidden sounds and three letters. Together they symbolize the Absolute consciousness(zero).

The lower curve represents  outward moving wakeful consciousness,  middle curve  represents the inner moving dream consciousness and the upper curve represents the silent consciousness of deep sleep.  The semi circle above  the upper curve represents turiya or the pure consciousness  and the Oneness as the three Gods become one ‘Brahman’ as detailed above.

Its form is worshipped, contemplated upon or used as an auspicious sign.  It is also used in greetings
As Om, Hari om!  and repeated as mantra or meditated also.  It is made up of three letters (அகார, உகார, மகார)  A as in ‘around’ U as in ‘put’ and M as in ‘mum’.  I have already in earlier postings that the three letters symbolizes three states i.e., waking, dream and deep sleep and also the three deities, three lokas. The formless attributes of Lord Brahman is represented in the silence between two Om chants.  ‘AUM’ is called pranava mantra i.e., the symbol by which is Lord is praised.  It is said that the Lord started creating everything after chanting ‘AUM’ and ‘Atha’. Hence its sound is considered as  auspicious beginng for any task we undertake.

Person hindering YOUR growth is dead! !!!

One day all the employees reached the office and they saw a big advice on the door on which it was written:

“Yesterday the person who has been hindering your growth in this company passed away. We invite you to join the funeral”.

In the beginning, they all got sad for the death of one of their colleagues, but after a while they started getting curious to know who was that man who hindered the growth of his colleagues and the company itself.

The excitement in the gym was such that security agents were ordered to control the crowd within the room. The more people reached the coffin, the more the excitement heated up.

Everyone thought: “Who is this guy who was hindering my progress?
Well, at least he died!”

One by one the thrilled employees got closer to the coffin, and when they looked inside it they suddenly became speechless. They stood nearby the coffin, shocked and in silence, as if someone had touched the deepest part of their soul.

There was a mirror inside the coffin: everyone who looked inside it could see himself. There was also a sign next to the mirror that said:
“There is only one person who is capable to set limits to your growth:
IT IS YOU”.

Your life does not change when your boss changes, when your friends change, when your centre changes. Your life changes when YOU change, when YOU go beyond your limiting beliefs.

So Wake up !  Get ready !

FRIENDS ! ENJOY EVERY MOMENT OF LIFE !!!

A story tells that two friends

were walking  through the desert  During some point of the  Journey they had an Argument, and one friend Slapped the other one  In the face.

The one who got slapped was hurt, but without  saying anything,  wrote in the sand:

“TODAY MY BEST FRIEND   SLAPPED ME IN THE FACE “.

They kept on walking  until they found an oasis, where they decided  to take a bath. The one who had been  slapped got stuck in the  mire and started drowning,  but the friend saved him.  After he recovered from the near drowning,  he wrote on a stone:

TODAY MY BEST FRIEND  SAVED MY LIFE.

The friend who had slapped  and saved his best friend  asked him, "After I hurt you,  you wrote in the sand and now,  you write on a stone, why?"

The other friend replied  "When someone hurts us  we should write it down in sand where winds of forgiveness can erase it away..

But, when someone does  something good for us, we must engrave it in stone where no wind  can ever erase it."

LEARN TO WRITE  YOUR HURTS IN  THE SAND AND TO  CARVE YOUR  BENEFITS IN STONE!!!

They say it takes a minute to find a special person, an hour to appreciate them, a day to love them, but then  an entire life to forget them.

Send this phrase to the people you'll never  forget. If you don't  send it to anyone,  it means you're in a hurry and that you've  forgotten your friends.  Take the time to live!

Do not value the THINGS   you have in your life. But value

WHO you have in your life!

" Happiness is not something you find, it's something you create…"

SO  ENJOY EVERY  MOMENT

BEAUTIFUL THOUGHT BY LORD BUDDHA - NICE

Once Buddha was travelling with a few of his followers.  While they were passing a lake, Buddha told one of his disciples, " I am thirsty.  Do get me some water from the lake."

The disciple walked up to the lake. At that moment, a bullock cart started crossing through the lake. As a result the water became very muddy and turbid. The disciple thought, "How can I give this muddy water to Buddha to drink?

So he came back and told Buddha. "The water in there is very muddy. I do not find it is fit to drink.

After about half an hour, again Buddha asked the same disciple to go back to the lake. The disciple went back, and found that the water was still muddy. He returned and informed Buddha about the same.
After sometime, again Buddha asked the same disciple to go back.

This time, the disciple found the mud had settled down, and the water was clean and clear. So he collected some water in a pot and brought it to Buddha.

Buddha looked at the water, and then he looked up at the disciple and said," See what you did to make the water clean. You let it be, and the mud settled down on its own -- and you have clear water.

Your mind is like that too ! When it is disturbed, just let it be. Give it a little time. It will settle down on its own. You don't have to put in any effort to calm it down. It will happen. It is effortless."

Having 'Peace of Mind' is not a strenuous job; it is an effortless process!

DISTANCE BETWEEN EARTH AND SUN - SCIENCE AND VEDA

The minimum distance between Earth and Sun is 91.00 million miles and the maximum distance is 94.5 million miles.  The mean distance is about 93 million miles.

I have in a pevious blog stated that the distance between earth and moon is 108 times the diameter of the moon and the distance between earth and sun is 108 times the diameter of the sun.  This roughly tallies with modern day calculations. Also modern day scientist admit that the universe is ever expanding. Further taking into consideration apogee, perigee,  huge time lapse between veda period and now, we can safely presume that the Indians are far ahead in astronomy during Vedic period.

In Hanuman Chalisa there is one sloga and it goes as:

"Yug sahastra yojan per Bhanu!
Leelyo taahi madhur phal janu!!

1 yug = 12000(chatur yug 1200+2400+3600+4800 divine years)-earlier posting
1 Sahasra = 1000
1 Yojan = 8 miles
yug x sahasra x yojan
12000 x 1000 x 8  = 96,000,000 miles approximately tallies taking into aspect time lapse, rotation, orbit etc.

How true our forefathers? They had the divine power because of Veda.

(A learned person is indeed one whose actions are not deterred by winter, summer, fear, attachment to objects of sense, prosperity or adversity)

(A learned person is verily one who is not overjoyed on being respected, not pained on being insulted but remains calm and cool like the gangetic ocean)
